Iron Product Story

Downtown has been influenced by the latest industrial trends and meets the needs of interior designers for low maintenance, lightweight concrete. A highly versatile concrete-effect tile, Downtown is available in seven sizes (up to 600 x 1200 mm) and can provide an uninterrupted concrete surface for both large and smaller areas. Two available finishes including Natural and Grip mean that Downtown can be specified both internally and externally and for exceptionally high traffic areas. The 20 mm Grip option also caters for pedestal and dry laying as well as driveway, garden and patio projects. Five contemporary colours ranging from ‘Bone’ to ‘Coal’ display a rustic appearance with the unmistakable shading and etching of raw cement. Downtown shows a softer side through clever use of its accompanying ‘Variation’ decor tiles which mimic reclaimed Mediterranean encaustic floor tiles; or for that hand finished feel, the new ‘Hexagon’ shaped tile will deliver a striking feature wall. So whether your project requires an aged warehouse floor or an intricate patchwork pattern, Downtown is now the ultimate ‘go-to’ urban tile. Iron is part of our Concrete-effect Collection.

Pendulum Test Values (BS 7976-2)

FinishConditionsResultSlip Potential

Understanding Pendulum Data

The HSE Approved Pendulum Test accurately replicates the Dynamical Coefficient of Friction (COF) or 'Heel Slip' on floor surfaces and is designed to replicate a pedestrian heel strike, the point at which most slips occur.

The pendulum test readings obtained are referred to as either the Slip Resistance Value (SRV) or Pendulum Test Value (PTV). When the test is operated properly, the PTV should be interpreted as shown in the table below. This table relates to pedestrians walking in a straight line on a level surface. It can be used to accurately test the slip potential on dry or contaminated floors.

PTVSlip Potential
0 - 24High
25 - 35Moderate
36 +Low

See British Standard BS 7976-2 for more information on conducting Floor Pendulum Testing on pedestrian surfaces. Pendulum Test Certificate available on request.

Understanding Ramp Test Data

DIN Standard Ramp Testing (DIN 51130) is an alternative to Pendulum Testing and generally categorised as an 'off-site' activity because of the size and complexity of the equipment required to carry out the test. The Slip Resistance Values (RSV) are factory gate values (based on supplied tiles) and categorised using the Ramp Test (DIN 51130) method which is commonly used by European factories. In this method, a lubricated inclined platform is adjusted to a gradually increasing gradient, and the angle is measured at which a person walking on it slips.

We have deliberately not included the ramp test angles on this page as this information can be confused with the angle that a floor may be safely set to, which is incorrect. The shod test results are quoted as an R Rating value from R9 to R13, which relates to the ramp angle.

R Rating ValueFriction
R13Very high

See the Health and Safety Executives website for more information regarding the Ramp Test procedure. Ramp Test Certificate available on request.
